नशिबाने निसर्ग सौंदर्याने नटलेल्या या देशाने "First impression is the last impression" ही म्हण खोटी ठरवली.

I was told to make the previous article to 1000-2000 words, so here's the updated version:

Wonder woman

My feminist take on Wonder woman:
Hippolyta has refused to train Diana out of love. Now the time comes, when the Amazonian women are faced with newer weapons than the bows and arrows they are used to. The Queen gets a dose of realism that with all probability their shield is no match against the bullets. The entire island sets out to "engineer" new materials for Diana's shield. Maybe there is a volcano or two on the island? Maybe they even use the metal from Captain Trevor's plane. In the meantime, Captain Trevor is training Diana with a knowledge of "weapons deadlier than you can think of". Kind of a perfect amalgamation of the ancient wisdom with modern science. She gets a crash course in chemistry. Surely the word "formula" did not exist in Amazonian vocabulary.

Rotimatic, Kapda aur Makaan

Rotimatic is a revolutionary new product that seeks to automate the hours of manual work needed to make rotis. Everyone in my family, including my folks back home are pretty excited about the machine, and look forward to owning it soon. I saw the Rotimatic in action yesterday at the Spring India festival in the Bay Area, and here are some thoughts:

First of all, the rotis tasted great. The Rotimatic makes a "ghadichi poli", which is a 3 layered roti, instead of a simple "fulka". I am quite surprised, and frankly quite impressed that the makers did not go for a simple fulka for the first version.

Secondly, the CTO of the company is a woman. Great job Pranoti! I am proud of you.

When I make rotis by hand, I knead the dough, cover it, and leave it alone for around half an hour. While I do this only because I have seen my parents/ others do this, I am sure there is some reason why people must be doing it. Maybe it makes the rotis stay softer the next day. Or maybe the way the bread dough "rises" due to microbial activity, there could be some beneficial interaction going on when you let the kneaded dough sit even when there is no yeast added. (Yeast only quickens the fermentation, idly batter still ferments without adding any additional yeast.)

The version I saw in the demo kneads for each roti separately. Maybe in the future, there could be a "let a kneaded ball sit there" feature. Of course I mean for a group of rotis, not half an hour wait per ball per roti.

Secondly, the machine requires 1.6KW to 1.8KW of power. I inquired with my rental apartment management whether a high power device would work OK with the current wiring. This is the reply:

Hi,
I’m following up with the question regarding the appliance that you are trying to purchase. Unfortunately our breaker for the kitchen outlets are 15 amps which will not be enough for the appliance.

The moving parts, and the containers that hold the flour, water and oil are made of plastic. While the plastic used is food-safe and FDA approved (I scoured their website, but their FAQ did not say the plastic is BPA free), I try to avoid plastic in my day to day life, especially when food and heat are in picture. There is no way a machine that uses 1600W will not be emitting some heat onto the plastic parts.

The primary reason why I am interested in buying the Rotimatic is because I substitute the home-cooked rotis here with the store bought rotis or burrito. The rotis bought from the Indian store do not mention which preservatives have been added. (I am sure they do add some.) The burrito package lists a whole bunch of preservatives, leavening agents and other chemicals I have no idea about. When I am not eating the burritos, I am eating rice instead. However, every healthy diet recommendation out there asks you to limit your consumption of grains, and eat more fruits and vegetables instead. Maybe our reliance on grains is one of the reasons why India is a Diabetes hotspot. The steep price tag on the machine isnt making me eat any healthier.

So all in all, I have to dampen my enthusiasm for the product for a while.

In memory of Kama aji

Kama aji is my maternal grandmom's sister.

The earliest memory I have is when I was about 4 years old. Kama aji looked way younger than her age (she also was amongst the youngest of my aji's sisters). Every time Kama aji and Shyam ajoba visited India, they would have a get-together with all the respective siblings. In this particular get-together with my aji- Kama aji's siblings, there's a photo with Kama aji pointing towards my dad, and the caption of the photo is "hach amcha javai". I don’t remember the context or the story behind the photo, however the caption and her smile is what I still do.

During that visit, Kama aji got me a musical teddy bear. Few years later, I remember them gifting me an egg-shaped virtual pet toy, Tamagotchi. It would give the player a happiness quotient based upon how much the player has petted/ fed the pet. I soon figured out how to “factory reset” the toy, so that I could get a new avatar of the pet after every reset. Next, I pried open the screws and the back cover of the toy. The toy used a button-cell, and this new kind of battery baffled me. (In India, almost everything except for the wristwatches used AAA batteries, and I was too young to change wristwatch batteries then.) I asked them what this new type of battery was. Shyam ajoba always was very patient with me. One time I told him that I "discovered" Pythagorean triplets. Shyam ajoba explained, through a hand-written letter, how I could use "x" to substitute stuff and check that my "discovery" works for all odd numbers. Though I laugh at how naive and silly I was back then, I give a lot of credit to Shyam ajoba to patiently explain things to me without being condescending, and in fact give me a tool to explore more of mathematics way before we learnt about "x"s and equations in school. When I visited them in USA; inspite of meeting them for the first time, Shirish, Asha, Anjali all made me feel welcome. This speaks a great deal about you both, Kama aji and Shyam ajoba. During my Boston visit, I casually mentioned that I like besan laddu. Three years after my first visit, when I visited them again, Kama aji did not forget the small details, and made besan laddus for me.

Both Shyam ajoba and Kama aji used to write detailed letters about their life in USA. A snowfall would be so vividly described that reader would feel like they are standing in Boston shovelling off the snow alonside Shyam ajoba. One time Kama aji described how she hid in the bushes, tiptoed around a bunny, put a basket around it and got a pet out of this. Another time, Kama aji described how Anjali went out crawling in her yard to take photos of a bear in her yard. It was very evident that both Kama aji and Shyam ajoba were gifted with words! I always wonder how Kama aji and Shyam ajoba retained so much of their Marathi vocabulary. Their letters used to describe the events that their group used to organize. Kudos to their group of Marathi friends. Kama aji always addressed the country as "BHARAT (India)" on the letter. We youngsters look up to you all and we sincerely hope that we carry forward your task of preserving the heritage.

Kama aji was fun-loving. My aji shares a story of how as kids they were once playing dumb charades with Marathi sayings as the theme. Kama aji chose "वाखाणला गुरव देवळात हगला" (praised priest shat in the temple). To act it out, Kama aji squatted and made farting sounds. My aji still fondly remembers the day, and bursts into laughter at the memory. Kama aji taught their dog Bella some unusual tricks: "Bella sit like a lady" and then the dog would sit with its front legs crossed. Kama aji would animatedly describe how Bella would fetch the newspapers off all of the neighbours' driveways.

Kama aji was very efficient, and very practical. When she was diagnosed with glaucoma, her letter made it sound very trivial so that she wouldn't worry my granny. Once Shyam ajoba's foot was run over by a car. Kama aji described in the letter that she carried food for both of them with her to the hospital. She iterated that she has to take care of herself first in order for her to take care of others. I simply cherish this quote of her.

In spite of her bubbling laughter, all was not rosy in the initial years. One anecdote shared by my granny was that Shyam ajoba's mom wasn’t very impressed with how thin Kama aji was at the time of the wedding. (Brides these days diet specifically to look thin, guess it wasn’t in vogue back then!) Apparently the mother-in-law kept asking the elder sisters if Kama aji was healthy. Another memory Pushpa aji told me: When Kama aji- Shyam ajoba got married, Kama aji and Pushpa aji were bawling their eyes out during the "bidaai". Shyam ajoba joked that he won’t take away kama aji with him if the sisters are so sad to leave each other. Not too long after the wedding, Pune faced a devastating flood. Just when the situation looked bleak, Shyam kaka had an job opportunity in the USA. Anjali was very young and Kama aji was pregnant with Shirish at the time. Imagine a family who has lost almost everything in the floods and is now uprooting their life in India to settle abroad. Armed with very little money (I guess with only 12$), they landed in the USA. Thankfully, Shyam kaka made his employer aware of the situation and the stipend that would be given after a fortnight of work was given to them earlier. Kama aji and Shyam ajoba braved the situation, and carved out their happy life in the USA.

She will always be there smiling and happy in our memories.

Sexism I face

The newly-elected premier of the country I currently stay in proudly claims to have groped women. While approximately half of the said country's population comprises of females (no sex-selection here) I wonder how the premier got through in the first place. Unfortunately, abuse is so deeply ingrained and internalized in our society that sometimes we can be blind to glaring abuse. Here are some of the pearls recently heard/ experienced.

I saw a meme on Facebook that says: Kids take girls out on dates, men take women out on coffee. Legends say: Bai vadyavar ya. Aka legends "invite" women in their playroom. The meme was complete with the photo of a person who regularly portrays villainous roles in Marathi movies. There were several likes and shares on the meme, and somehow nobody paused to think about the sexually abusive overtones of the meme.

"Girls flirt with the guys in their team and that's how they get their workshop tasks done in the first year of Engineering." - Classmate at University of Florida. When I told him I studied in an all-girls college, he concluded that we must be flirting with the workshop assistants.

"These days  (insert the name of some MNC here) is doing a lot of diversity hires. You should get in easily."  - Friend

"All women are horrible coders. If you feel women are equally good, yet get paid lesser than their male counterparts, then why is there no company who hires only women coders, save on salaries, and still be successful." - Friend, whose wife did her Masters in one of the top 5 Universities for Computer Science in USA.

"But (insert the name of my male colleague here), had already gotten this to work, why are you still working on it." - Colleague. That was because my male colleague had not gotten it to work.

"There is a huge difference between my son and my daughter. I feel that I must have done something really pious in my previous birth to have such a loving daughter." - Friend

"I married a guy staying in US. I thought since he already manages on his own in the US, he will do the chores after the wedding too. Ever since we got married, I am the only one who's done all the cooking." Kahaani ghar ghar ki.

"A lot of jobs in Networking are not suitable for women. It requires lifting heavy equipment, and going to different locations." - A woman friend who is currently job searching in Networking.

And the cherry on top of these pearls of wisdom:
"ata ti kahitari faltu vichar kartiye, kachrapatti blog lihayla" - the husband

I see no hope for the betterment of the society.

Sandy eggo trip

J interned with my company at Melbourne. I visited her in San Diego during another internship.
The day I visited her, her company had an intern event to learn surfing. After spending 4 years at Florida, and 2 of them 4 miles away from the ocean, I am very sad to say that I never surfed in Florida. To be honest I was scared off by the shark attack statistics. The ocean water at the West coast of the US a way colder than the water at East coast. But water at San Diego is warmer than the ocean water at Bay Area beaches, plus there are very few instances of shark attacks off the west coast. So I jumped at the opportunity, and signed up for the surfing lessons. Inspite of me knowing how to swim, J fared better at the lessons than me.

Post surfing lessons, we checked out other beautiful beaches at San Diego, beautiful locales like the La Jolla coves, and an exceedingly beautiful sunset.

We also went for tandem paragliding. I had a lot of internal debate since it was kind of expensive. Finally I made up my mind about going for it, also invited couple other friends to join me at the paragliding school. When we went there we were told that we probably couldnt get to fly because the wind wasnt too strong. Our only redeeming feature was that we all were quite light in weight then, so the instructor told us to hang around a bit. He said if the wind picked up for us to go up but wasnt enough to come down, then we would be landing at the beach and making the hike up with the parachute. Thankfully the wind picked up, and we got to go up and fly. The instructor let me handle the ropes for a bit. While coming down, the instructor asked me to stick out my legs so that we can land safely and the instructor can land running without tripping over my legs. However in the heat of the moment I could not pick up my legs high enough and nearly broke the legs of my poor instructor. Turns out being light in weight is no excuse for not heeding to instructions. Thanks God he was ok!

One memorable incident from this trip is J, J's roommate who is also from Pune and I went to an Himalayan restaurant. J asked for their spiciest dish, and found it to be not as spicy as she expected. (J is not an Indian, and I was surprised she could handle the spice.) The server brought out a few drops of a chutney-like thing which was the spiciest thing in their kitchen. J handled it with aplomb, much to the surprise of the server and her Indian friends.

Tahoe in winter

Soon after I came to the US for my Masters program, Reno and Tahoe were toolsets of a software called simplescalar. I tested some supercomputing algorithms using Simplescalar. Few years down the line, once in Cali, they became places for a weekend getaway.

My friends from Melbourne were visiting Cali, and we decided to go skiing at mountain resorts in Tahoe followed by a stay at Reno. Lake Tahoe forms a fluid boundary between California and Nevada. Surrounded by tall mountains, the Lake provides a picturesque setting with snow capped mountains and a lake so large that the water isn't frozen inspite of the chill.

Reno has an international airport too. I suggested that my friend fly into Reno airport, but we had a to and fro roadtrip from bay area. Travelling in winter meant a possibility of requiring snow chains for the car. None of us really had any experience of putting a snow chain, but thankfully we didnt need it on the trip.

We had a ski lesson, which started off without us. But we managed, and I even had a ride up the lift and a tumble down with the ski whacking my nose. Our tryst with the slot machines/ blackjack at Reno wasn't very successful either, but my friend theorized that one needs to bet big to win big.  We stopped on our way back to meet few more pals at Folsom. All in all, all the trappings of a good weekend outing - adventures, misadventures and friends.

Cute pet pics

Photo from June 2015

Yesterday was my last day with my company. Posting photos of the dogs I love, and will miss.

When I went for my interview, Dakota was out sunning herself. Our CEO V opened the door for me and I told her I am scared of dogs. By the time the interview was over, I was sure I was going to get the job. I was walked over to meet everyone, and the 3 dogs in the office. All the 3 dogs are super calm, and I hesistantly petted Dakota. I next went to F about 15 days later, to have a talk to D about my preparation before I join the company. Dakota walked up to me, and put her paw on my shin, thereby accepting me in her pack, and sealing the deal. :) My first love!!
This photo is from 2014, and already I am enamored by Dakota. This darling retriever, true to her breed, will bring over any bite sized object to you when you call her. By now I am calling her Daku, Dacoity, Dakots

Dakota will walk up to you and nudge you to get you to pet her. That's me on the chair, and Daku seeking attention

Once you start petting her, she will settle dangerously close to the chair. The chair is a regular wheeled office chair, and I worry that I might run over her. "Dakota move!!" doesnt work till her owner tells me that the command is "Dakota pee peep"
Her spot on the sofa

There is something about dogs that will bring out primal feelings

who can resist a face like that
How I miss the touch of those silky ears
demanding a belly rub from her subservient human

When she is not lounging inside, she is usually sunning herself out, even after she had a surgery. K had to put a vest on her to prevent wood chippings from opening up the sutures. She was not allowed on the hard cement, but with the vest on, she was hot and wanted to lie on the cement. Even though she looks cute with the tee, it was actually heartbreaking to see her in sutures with a drain collecting the blood oozing out

It took me a long time after falling in love with Dakota, to fall for the other 2 dogs. The second I fell for was Montana. I noticed him quite late, partly because he is always sitting under K's desk. But once I saw that he was teddy bear personified, he became one dream pet.
Putting his furry self  at my feet to demand a belly rub

This is usually how he sits all Day. This is the time when K was out and D was looking after the dogs, and the few rare occasions when Montana is sitting out in the open.
Under a desk/ table is usually where you will find Montana..also notice the wound from a foxtail in the paw
My fluffy/ smiley/ thumpy

My CTO once mentioned that Durango is the epitome of being a "Dog". His owner is the whole and soul of his existence. That was the first time I noticed Durango seriously. Before that all of my interaction with Durango was because of E, who liked to play fetch with Durango, and its quite entertaining to watch Dakota and Durango grapple over the ball.  Once I started taking Durango seriously, I discovered how soft the fur around his neck is and how much I actually enjoyed petting him. So far my ideal dog was a furry kind, but my CTO's words shone a new light on Labs.
Durango

Isn't he handsome!

Adorbs

Sasha
The 4th dog to enter the office is this wooly old man Sasha. He was 12 when he first joined the company. He will jump and hop around and bound like a kitten/ bunny mix, despite his advanced age. The name Sasha sounds like a girl name, but is actually a boy name in Russia. Its a short for Alexander in Russia. The dog also responds to Sushi.

Sasha with a haircut, but apparently they dont trim the eyebrow hair, to get the "Schnauzer face"
And this is how he looks like when he hasnt had a haircut in a while
Tick
Pet ownership is not just the cuddles. The poop needs to be picked up, foxtails need to be plucked from the paws, and sometimes..ticks need to be removed from the skin.

I went to India in April 2015. When I came back in May, there was another surprise waiting for me. The day I saw Lucy for the first time, I was wearing a tee with a face of tiger on it. Lucy barked her head off at me. I wondered if it was because of the tee. The tiny and younger Lucy was the first dog I learnt to pick up, and eventually got quite comfortable carrying her around.
Photo from the day I first met Lucy

Eventually I learnt to pick her up too
She was grumpy when they trimmed her hair, so the owners figured out she was cold

This dog thinks she is a human, and that she is your alpha
But when she does think she is a lap dog, she will snuggle up to you

She is actually J's dog, but she adopted M as her boyfriend. When Sasha got a upgraded bed, M inherited Sasha's old bed to be used as Lucy's second home.
I tried to steal Lucy's bed and keep it under my desk, but she is so enamored by M that she won't leave his side
This is Gaby, she is also a Schnauzer. She was the 2nd dog after Dakota who is enamored by me, partly because her owner used to be my desk neighbour, and she could look at me all day from her vantage point
since Gaby is a girl dog, she wears Minnie mouse bows
Every time I come back from India, there is a new dog waiting for me at the office. This is Yoshi. He has the softest fur of the lot.
Travis is an Australian shepherd, another sweetheart. He has a Harley Davidson leash, and also has super soft fur

This was the first dog in the office that I was genuinely scared of

Christmas dapperness!
